* A blog where the islands of the Azores play the main role...
Discovering the island of São Jorge, on foot or by car, it’s grandness is notorious, but by boat it is majestic. It’s 53 km of length and 8 km go width are born from the sea, leaving no one indifferent to its 400m high slopes and its many fajãs.
We can only thank Márcio and Dario, our skippers, for the wonderful trip. Their friendliness and professionalism made all the difference and... they can count on us next summer.

* Yes, azoreans. After nine years living loving this land, I can consider myself an azorean. A borrowed azorean, but never the less, an azorean.

O piso é óptimo, tornando a caminhada descontraída.
This trail exceeded all my expectations. It was one of the best tracks I've ever done. The ground is firm, making it a leisurely stroll. Among hydrangeas and pastures, were viewed on the south coast, the islands of Pico and Faial, and on the north coast, the islands of Graciosa and Terceira. Extended at our feet was the mountain range of volcanic cones that form the "spine" of the island of São Jorge, where some craters are occupied by small ponds.
Once n the top of Pico da Esperança, the highest point on the island of São Jorge, with 1053 meters, we feel the world at our feet. As expected we saw all the islands of the central group. The notion of archipelago is very present in the central group, we see our "neighbors"...
The descent to the parish of Norte Grande gives us a completely different landscape, but equally fascinating. With the island of Graciosa as a backdrop, we crossed pastures, leaving the cows curious with our passing.
After arriving in the Fajã do Ouvidor, tired but happy, we through ourselves into the sea for a well deserved bath, refreshing and reinvigorating...
"Small pieces of agricultural land between the cliff and the sea, the fajãs are a trace of individuality of São Jorge island.
Originated, or by landslides from the cliffs, caused by earthquakes, the fajãs are molded by the sea. They dazzle every traveler and summon the silence and simplicity to meditation and contemplation of nature. "(Dr. Leonel Nunes, in the preface to Ao Encontro das Fajãs, of Odília Teixeira)
The path to the Fajã of São João is a paved road, replacing the existing shortcut. At every turn of the path we are confronted with stunning viewpoints. In some we find tile panels depicting some traditions of the Fajã.

The island of São Jorge is my second home here in the Azores ...
My first (lightning bolt) visit to São Jorge was in 2007. Elisabete and I on a Monday morning, left São Miguel island bording the famous Santorini (boat), spent the night in Faial island, and only 27 hours later we arrived in Velas, São Jorge. We were on the island of São Jorge for 45 hours, after which we made the return trip to Ponta Delgada. We were called crazy... and so justly. But it was so worthwhile...
At the time, I did not know that it was in São Jorge that my husband was born and lived until the age of 15. What a wonderful island ...
São Jorge is our refuge and whenever we can, there we are ... Sometimes for very short periods, others longer. During summer, a visit is mandatory...

The Church os Santa Bárbara - Manadas
In the parish of Manadas (Velas- São Jorge island) we find the church os Santa Bárbara. The white of the church walls stand out over the darkness of the basaltic rocks that is it built on. The parish is built along a hillside, overlooking the Atlantic ocean and Pico island. The church is left at the foot of this hillside, along a small harbour.
The church is classified as a monument a public interest.
