Castro Verde
Today ended like this...
A visit to the Lagoas do Congro e Nenúfares (lilies) have been on our plans for some time, but often by forgetfulness, we never got to go. The weekend presented us with a dazzling sun and a blue sky, and there we went…
The lagoas (lakes) are located in the central area of the island of São Miguel, belonging to the municipality of Vila Franca do Campo.
Being the starting point the city of Ponta Delgada or the city of Ribeira Grande, go in direction towards Furnas, then follow the signs indicating: Lagoa do Congro.
After leaving the tarred road, we entered a narrow dirt road. About 1000 meters further on, is the beginning of the footpath. It is necessary to park the car as well as possible, along one of the margens, as the road is narrow.
Down a winding path, through a humid forest with large trees, we reach the Lagoa do Congro. There is plenty of shade, given the little lighting that penetrates the foliage of trees. With so much moisture there is moss cover the sideways. The path is easy, but it is necessary to be careful with the mud, given the many water springs in the area.
Having reached the end of the path we are greeted by a pond of a deep green color. It is standing on the pontoon that we can better appreciate the Lagoa do Congro. It has a perimeter of about 1250 meters, surrounded by dense trees that hide the crater walls. Unlike most of the ponds on the island of São Miguel, which are situated on top of a volcanic cone, this is a huge "hole" embedded in the surrounding vegetation..
In peace, the silence is broken only by the cries of the Milhafres (hawks) and the jumping of the fish in the water.
There are several side trails in the area surrounding the Lagoa do Congro, but they are blocked or inaccessible to most visitors. Its is a shame, because they access to small viewpoints over the forest, to clearings ideals for a picnic, to go around the ridge of the volcano crater and reach the Lagoa dos Nenúfares (Lillie pond).
Along a path obstructed by brambles, with difficulty we reached the Lagoa dos Nenúfares. I was very disappointed. This small pond is completely silted up, looking like a swamp. There were many water lilies, but they were surrounded by other vegetation that oppressed them. It's a matter of time until the pond of lilies disappears.

Consultar aqui.

The lack of information signs makes it difficult to visit this crater, because without them, visitors have no idea of the extent, duration and rating the of the main or secondary walking trails.
The Association Amigos dos Açores (Friend of the Azores), presented in 2010 a fantastic proposal for the recovery and management of crater of the Lagoas do Congro and Nenúfares. Until today nothing has been done. This link was the one with more and better information I found about the lagoas. It has some maps that can be useful.

Autum is arriving...
The days are shorter...
The nights are cooler...
The leaves of the trees cover the sideways...
The chirping of birds is different... they are saying goodbye before flying to warmer places...
The blue in the sky is dimmed, becoming grayer ...
Os almoços de Domingo merecem ser demorados. Tempo para serem cozinhados e tempo para serem degustados...
Sunday lunches deserve to take their time. Time to be made and time to be appreciated...
Octopus Cataplana...
Cook the octopus in a pressure pot with salt, black pepper and jamaican pepper (grain), a bay leaf, a pod of chili, a laminated onion, crushed garlic, white wine and little olive oil.
In the cataplana sauté onion cut into thin slices and chopped garlic in olive oil. Add red pepper cut into thin strips, peeled ripe tomato (or tomato paste) and coriander or parsley. Stir and let simmer for a few minutes. Add the octopus cut into pieces, stir and leave to simmer again. Add a little white wine and some of the (stained) cooking water of the octopus. Cover and cook for 25-30 minutes.
I suggest accompanying with cooked or roasted sweet potatoes.
Santa Catarina Tuna...
Heir to the century-old canning tradition of the island of São Jorge, in the Azores, the Canning Industry of Santa Catarina is dedicated to canned tuna.
Santa Catarina tuna is made with tuna caught by a pole and line method (Handmade fly fishing), a method that permites the selection of the best specimens, safeguarding the preservation of the species and respecting the marine ecosystem. This practice has already earned, by the non-governmental organization: Earth Island Institute, the certifications "Dolphin Safe" and "Friend of the sea”. Santa Catarina is the first tuna fishery in the world to achieve these awards - a true example of sustainability. In addition to these awards, the brand has managed to raise recognition in the form of various awards for its products and now has visibility in major gourmet shops.
Homens no mar…
Women on land...

Meanwhile, at sea, it is the men that do the work. Fishing with the pole and line method, it become a duel between mana and tuna.
